Are the Streets still made for Dreaming?
This semester, Blending Magazine will explore the theme of “Are The Streets Still Made For Dreaming?”, a wide-open invitation to see the city itself as a stage for imagination, possibility, and everyday invention. The theme encourages us to treat “the street” not just as pavement and storefronts, but as a living social tapestry filled with street vendors, murals, nightlife, transit, protests, rituals, micro-economies, chance encounters, and the small gestures that make a place feel alive. We will ask: do our public spaces still nurture hope, creativity, and aspiration? Or have they been transformed by surveillance cameras, mass tourism, gentrification, and commerce? Students can use this theme as a lens for personal stories, visual essays, critical reporting, experimental formats, and playful features. Exploration on foot, neighborhood walks, and scraps from daily urban life are perfect source material for capturing the spirit of this inquiry.

Underground Florence
We’re excited to unveil the latest issue of Blending Magazine, dedicated to a side of Florence you won’t find in the tourist guides - welcome to Underground Florence! Known worldwide as the cradle of the Renaissance, Florence is also a city with a fiercely independent spirit and a rich undercurrent of artistic rebellion. In the 19th century, legendary literary cafés like Giubbe Rosse pulsed with the energy of poets, writers, and visionaries exchanging radical ideas. Fast forward to the 20th century, and Florence lit the fuse for avant-garde movements - from the explosive rise of Futurism and the emotional force of the Transavantgarde to experimental theater led by boundary-breaking figures like Carmelo Bene and the pioneering Krypton Theater. In the 1970s and '80s, Florence didn’t just observe cultural shifts - it led them. The city became a hotbed for New Wave music and radical architecture, leaving a bold mark on Italy’s creative landscape. Today, Florence continues to reinvent itself - blending deep-rooted tradition with cutting-edge innovation, and proving that its artistic heartbeat is as strong as ever. So dive into this immersive journey through the hidden layers of our city - and discover a Florence you’ve never seen before. Thank you for being part of the Blending Magazine community. The Renaissance of Material Media
We are excited to announce the release of the new issue of Blending! This Fall, with a renewed focus on material media, we set out to create an issue that reflects both academic inquiry and creative exploration. Developed within a semester dedicated to The Renaissance of Material Media in Film, Photography, and Beyond, this edition brings together diverse voices and perspectives shaped through dialogue with students, faculty, and engaged readers. Over an intensive 11-week semester, the magazine took form step by step. The early weeks were dedicated to defining the publication’s concept, theme, and editorial vision. From there, students moved into research, brainstorming, writing, interviewing, and rigorous proofreading, preparing each piece for publication. As the content matured, photography and graphic design teams collaborated closely with writers, translating ideas into a strong visual and narrative identity. What began as individual contributions evolved into a cohesive and intentional issue. Connected to The American University of Florence’s 14th Annual Academic Conference, this issue maintains a strong thematic focus on the resurgence of material media. Rather than constraining creativity, the theme encouraged experimentation, critical thinking, and personal engagement. Each section is designed to flow naturally into the next, building a dynamic and engaging reading experience.
